Muda in the Software Process – Does Every Activity Add Value?
- organisers: KevinRutherford & AndyLawrence
- session duration: 60 minutes
- session type: Workshop
- intended audience: The session will be valuable or anyone who wants to gradually improve their software development process. Developers and managers;journeyman and expert.
Session Description
Objectives:
The Lean Thinking revolution in manufacturing ocuses on gradual and continuous
process improvement (kaizen ). One of the principal factors in successful kaizen is the
identification and elimination of waste (muda )in the process, where 'waste' is defined
as any activity or state that exists without adding value for the customer.
This workshop will apply these ideas in the context of software development.
Beginning with the classical types of muda that were identified long ago in the
automotive industry, the group will explore 'waste'in software processes.
Contents:
This workshop will include activities such as:
- Review Toyota's classification of the seven types of muda
- Searching or each type of muda in the participants' own processes
- Brainstorming new types of muda specifically or software
Benefits
Participants will learn:
- some aspects of lean thinking
- a new tool for analysing software development processes
- some weaknesses in their current processes
- just how much time and effort we all waste!
The organisers hope to learn:
- new types of waste in a variety of software processes
- whether elimination of waste is a useful concept for software
- whether Taiichi Ohno's original classification of muda makes sense in the software context
Audience involvement:
Participants will take part in at least the following types of activity:
- exploration in small groups
- presentation & discussion of their findings
- collective brainstorming/think-tanks
