Be empowered - or else!
session description:
ExtremeProgramming does not define a "project manager" or a "team lead" role. It does have a "coach" role, whose responsibilities are to observe how the team is doing and reflect on that with the team – not to tell anyone what they should do. (Also, the coach is expected to fade away as the team becomes self-disciplining.) How can anyone expect a team to work without a boss – or at least a leader ? Yet if we are to pay more than lip service to the notion of "self-organizing" teams, we must understand how teams might function without externally imposed organization.
Timetable:
- 0:00-0:15 Entry; informal and structured Q&A
- 0:15-0:30 Mental models exercise - exploring the idea of "team"
- 0:30-1:15 Exercise: soft focus and the Circle
- 0:15-1:30 Reflection & mental model updates
History - the session draws on exercises used in the theatre by Anne Bogart. It has been run as a full-day workshop at XP2004.
what does the organiser hope to learn from the session:
- form a better model of what "teams" in general are, "self-organized teams" in particular
- gain experience at fostering self-organized behaviour in impromptu teams
- gain practice at running highly experiential sessions
