What is the role of a project leader in an agile project?

Organisers: WillemvandenEnde, MarcEvers

Session duration: 45 minutes

Session type: Workshop

Intended Audience: Project managers, technical leads, and developers who are involved in or moving towards agile projects

Session language: English

Description:

In this session we will investigate the role of a project leader in an agile project. Is this role different from the project leader role in a non-agile project? What responsibilities does a project leader have and which activities are most valuable?

To focus the discussion, we introduce a number of statements with respect to the role of a project leader of an agile project. Based on our own experience, we agree with some, disagree with others. What do you think?

  • If a project manager is very busy with a project, he is a bad project manager.
  • The developers and the customer jointly set priorities.
  • An agile development team works with minimal intervention from the project manager.
  • Agile teams should be self-steering.
  • The project manager is an intermediary between customers and programmers.
  • The project manager checks the timesheets of the developers to track effort spent on the project.
  • Being a good programmer is a prerequisite for being a good manager.
  • The project manager encourages programmers to work harder if progress is too slow.
Participants are encouraged to bring in their own statements. During the workshop, participants will choose three of the statements to discuss in detail.

Benefits:

  • Learn about leading an agile project.
  • Share experiences and do's and don'ts of agile project management.
Process:

  • Introduction and selection of 3 discussion statements.
  • 3 timeboxed discussions of the selected statements; the organizers will act as recorders.
  • Wrap-up.
